The Magic Haircut

Yesterday I had a haircut and eyebrow wax. I decided against growing my hair out (again) and decided to keep the pixie for a while longer (or possibly forever). I've always spent an awful lot of time thinking about my hair and have wondered if hair is just like every other aspect of our lives in the way that we humans often tend to think our lives will miraculously improve if we just make one more change; try something new; follow the next trend etc. You know what they say: the grass is always greener on the other side...

There is always this concept of self-improvement and yet after the chop is complete I've often regretted my decision. Did the hairdresser do a good enough job? Did I print out the right pictures? Is it crooked? and after deciding that the haircut is not really what I wanted I have decided that some old hair-cut of mine was "the haircut" and that I should try to get it that way, but by this stage I probably have a different hairdresser, I use different styling products and I have to remember how I described the cut to my hairdresser at the time. The result is always different.

I do remember once having a hairdresser tell me that a haircut won't make my hair look just like that in the picture. I would need to use styling products and tools too. After a while I have learned that she is right. And, it bothers me to hear people complain about the hairdresser's work when not a single dob of creme, spray, mouse, gel or wax has been used in the hair. Older ladies with perms are extremely bad for this. They won't use any sort of conditioning treatment or mouse in their freshly permed hair and wonder why it looks so frizzy. Healthy good-looking hair takes time, effort and product.

I also find it really annoying that some people will choose to have long hair because "girls must have long hair" or that they must have a style because so-and-so has it regardless of the face shape or the way the hair naturally sits. While long straight hair with a straight fringe might be the "in" thing at some point, the trend will change. And the haircut? on a person with thick wavy hair that naturally sits to one side? Would take a long time to style each morning. I'm no hairdresser, but trust me, I've been there.

I suppose my pixie cut is probably the best hair-cut I have had. With thick and wavy hair I've had difficulty keeping it long and neat and it has been too "big" when kept in a bobbed hair style. A pixie cut allows me to do finger-waves if I want (when it's nearly time to get my hair trimmed) and is perhaps the most grown-up I've ever looked. I suppose a Pixie would be my "Magic Hair Cut".

I don't like the fact that my ears and neck get cold, that I can't wear up-dos, that my collection of hair accessories lay unused in a trinket box on my duchess or that colouring my hair is about as pointless as making the bed, but I guess that is the price you pay for a magic hair-cut. I do like that in a way my fringe is uneven like Audrey Hepburn's was or that I can really pull off the vintage sunglasses and fifties liner without looking too try-hard, And that I can now dress ultra-feminine without looking out-of-place like I normally would.

What's your "Magic Hair Cut"?

In my pre-wig days, I never once had a haircut from a salon that I truly liked. Some were better than others, for sure, but each time I felt like they fell short of what I'd hoped for (I realized as the years went on that the many modern style layers most hairdressers put into my hair to try and it appear thicker did not actually work well for me and actually often made my hair look even thinner!).

I think the fact that I wasn't too keen my natural hair for a lot of my life didn't help. Once I started cutting and colouring my locks at home (for the last few years before it just became too thin) though, I liked my hair a lot more. I don't have a magic cut - but a classic 1940s middy style will always remain one of my favourites.

yes I do adore the middy style and did consider growing my hair into that style, but my hair is really thick and tends to puff out alot when i grow it.

I do love your wigs though. I never actually realised that all of your hair was a wig, it looks so natural. and, the colour really complements your eyes.

I do think DIY hair styles and treatments are a lot of fun though. As with doing your own make-up or a DIY face mask. It just makes you feel better about yourself.
